Art Art Art!!!!

Turkey Time

Kindergarten

*Kiddos in Kindergarten have been working on multiple projects!
*First we discussed the term self-portrait and talked about what a self-portrait includes. Next, we discussed the placement of things on our faces like our eyes, nose, mouth, ears, etc. Each kiddo drew their self-portrait with pencil and colored them using colored pencils. To complete our portraits, we attached a frame using crazy scissors to cut out a border.
*The second project that we have been working on was inspired by the artist, Wassily Kandinsky. We looked at his abstract art and discussed what abstract art was. Next, we folded our papers to create 8 squares and used oil pastels to color circles inside of each square. When they were finished, each kiddo painted the background of each square using watercolors. Some classes are currently finishing these!
*Kindergarteners are currently working with clay :)

First Grade

*First graders have been working on "scapes." We looked at images and discussed the difference between a landscape, cityscape and seascape. Next, each first grader received three pieces of paper and created their own version of each type of "scape." To incorporate some mixed media we are going to color one with marker, one with colored pencil and one we are going to paint with watercolor. When all three are done first grade students will attach all three to a large sheet of paper and label them. First graders are currently working on these and with clay. (Images to follow)

Second Grade

*Second grade students created an artwork after being inspired by a multicultural icon, the Aztec Calender Stone. We learned about the Calender Stone and the culture of people who used this stone. Fortunately, we even had a student who still uses this stone and he was able to share his knowledge with my classes! Using a purple sheet of paper and a pencil students then drew their own sun and incorporated different types of lines and patterns into their sun design. To complete these, second grade artists used construction paper crayons to add color.
*Currently my second grade classes are working on creating bubbles! We watched two short video clips (one realistic and one cartoon) showing bubbles. Before viewing the clips, I asked students to think about the following questions: What colors are in the bubbles? What shapes can bubbles be? How can we tell that the bubbles are three dimensional? We discussed the answers to these questions as a group and included some science when discussing prisms and how light reflects off of things. Next, second graders had a variety of circles to trace ranging in size. They began working independently and when they were done, they were allowed to connect their papers and add some bubbles this way as well. When this step was done they began adding color and highlights with oil pastels. Second grade artists are currently working on finishing these and they are working with clay!

Third Grade

Third graders are currently working on three different projects! Currently artists are creating zentangle landscapes, one-point perspective cities and they are working with clay. More information to follow!

Fourth Grade

Fourth grade students recently finished their Vincent Van Gogh inspired 3D chairs and they are currently working on crazy continuous contour line owls! First we discussed the meaning of a contour line, then we discussed what a blind contour line drawing is as well as a continuous contour line drawing. After showing them an example that I had created, I drew an additional example on the board. We then discussed a few terms for them to keep in mind while they drew such as: detail, overlap and continuous. They are currently coloring these with markers and adding colored pencil backgrounds. I absolutely love how unique each owl turned out! I believe that this project was very successful because it allowed each kiddo to be free with their drawing and not focus on being perfect like some tend to do at this age. We are currently working on these and with clay.

Sketchbook Assignments
Week 1 - Landscape (looking at a landscape or from memory)
Week 2 - Continuous Contour Line Self-Portrait
Week 3 - Draw something that you excel at drawing

4th Grade Oasis Kiddos

On Tuesdays, I have my Oasis kiddos from RV, which means that they have art twice a week.  Instead of having them do the same project two times, I have been allowing them to create additional art projects that we will not be completing in class. So far, these have just been extensions to what they are currently working on during their art class at RV.
*Continuous Contour Line Self-Portraits (a continuation to the owl project)
*Don Drumm Sun Pins (a continuation to the aluminum tooling project)
*Clay Slab Masks (a continuation of the clay mug assignment)
