@ The Beginning of the Year 

Square 1 Art Fundraiser 

Riverview Elementary and Fishcreek Elementary began the year working on a fundraiser for the school toward technology and other items for the classrooms. The wonderful thing about this fundraiser is that it involves ART!!! The kiddos draw on a special piece of the paper that the company provides, Mrs. Heverly (I) gives the kiddos some ideas/direction, they work on it in art class, we ship it back to the company and finally ordering information is sent home with the kiddos! Parents are able to order items such as t-shirts, cell phone cases, plates, coasters, etc. with their child's drawing in on it! These items are great for gifts or keepsakes! I might have made one for my little guy as well 0:)  Both buildings have sent in their Square 1 Art to be processed, so look for the order forms to be coming home soon! Orders @ both buildings are due by November 7, 2014.

Kindergarten 

Fall Trees

Kindergarten kiddos have been an amazing group of listeners this year which allows us to do even more in Art! I decided to start them off in the right direction with talking about detail! Our first artwork was based off of the seasons. We looked at a projected image of the 4 seasons and discussed what in the picture helped us determine which season was which. We then dug a little deeper with a discussion about Fall (trees, changing leaves, colors of the leaves, etc). Then it was time for some art making!! On a white sheet of paper each kiddo drew a tree using the letters Y and V to create the tree trunk and branches, previously demonstrated by myself. Next, using marker we added "detail" for the bark of the tree and for our grass. Crayons were then used to color in the tree, grass and any other items that my kindergarteners wanted to add. Last but not least, we used orange, red and yellow tempera paint to add leaves on or around our tree. We are currently working on Shape & Line Monsters! Images of those to follow!! :)

First Grade

Op-Art Seasons

First graders expanded on their previous knowledge of the seasons learned in Kindergarten. We revisited the same projected image from the previous year and discussed what in the image helped us to determine which season was which. Next, I assigned each table a season to draw and color using pencil and crayons. When the first season was done, first graders chose a second season to draw and color, this time using pencil and markers. I then cut them into strips and place them onto a larger colored piece of construction paper. Each kiddo then glued the strips into place. We then folded these papers like a fan to create our Optical illusion. When looking at the art from one direction the viewer sees the first season and when looked at from the opposite direction you can see the second season! We are currently working on these and a Self-Portrait. 

Second Grade

Picasso Portraits

Second Graders have been learning about the artist, Pablo Picasso. After viewing some of his artwork, we discussed why Picasso painting the way he did. I demonstrated an example of how we might take Picasso's painting style and apply it to a self-portrait. Each Kiddo then created their on Picasso Self-Portrait by drawing with pencil and coloring them with crayons or colored pencils. Lastly, a creative background was added to the self-portrait to complete the piece of art. 
We are currently working on Azetc Suns. 

Third Grade

Day of the Dead Skulls

To collaborate with Spanish, I introduced Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), a Mexican holiday that is celebrated on October 31st through November 2nd. We first discussed the focus of the holiday and then we viewed a variety of bright and colorful Day of the Dead masks and videos. Using a colored piece of construction paper and oil pastels, each student dew a skull and then added bright colorful decorations! 

We are currently finishing these up and will begin working on one-point perspective.

Fourth Grade

Don Drumm Suns & Van Gogh Chairs

Fourth graders are currently working on two artworks ; Don Drumm Suns and Vincent Van Gogh Chairs. 

Students discussed the Akron artist, Don Drumm, and viewed a variety of works created by him. Some students even realized that they may have a piece of his art at home and did not know who created it! After being inspired by Don Drumm, and other images of suns for diferentiantion, students created their own unique sun on a white square of paper. These squares of paper were then taped to a square of aluminum tooling and placed on a magazine to be traced. The image was then transferred onto the aluminum tooling and we will later add a black wash to the surface to make it appear similar to those of Don Drumm. 

In third grade, students learned about one point perspective. This year we are expanding upon that knowledge and adding some new terms including two-dimensional and three-dimensional art. After viewing the artwork titled "Bedroom in Arles" by Vincent Van Gogh, we really looked at the perspective of the bedroom that was painted (Things appear smaller if they are further away and larger if they are closer, everything has one vanishing point or one point of perspective). Students were then shocked to learn that we were going to focus on the chair in the painting and were very excited to make something 3D once I showed them my example. Photos are in-progress works.

*Sketchbooks*

Sketchbooks have been ordered and each fourth grade student will receive a sketchbook! Once a week I will assign a sketchbook assignment that will be discussed during the following art class. I believe that having an art critique about their sketchbooks will help them talk about their art once they are at Lakeview and Kimpton. Students who complete the assignment will be given bonus points! These sketchbooks are for the kiddos to keep and can be taken home! Also, they are allowed to draw in them in addition to their assignments, keeping the drawings school appropriate of course! These can also be decorated at home or I have supplies here at school! :)

*When in the art room (for those kiddos who bring art boxes) we should ALWAYS have:

When we complete our Art we... Keep Creating!

  This is our "go-to" area when we have completed our artwork! These are alternate art projects that we are not going to do as a class and they are generally related to what we have been learning about or another form of art.

Welcome Back :D

Welcome to our

2014-15 School Year!

 

Welcome back Fishcreek & Riverview Elementary Kiddos!! 

*For our first week back in the Art Room (K-4) we have been working on our art portfolios! These are simply our folders that will contain our artwork as the year progresses until the Art Show! Each artist has their own with their first and last name. We spent time decorating them after we reviewed classroom procedures, safety information and art supplies and other fun information! 

Next week looks something like this....

*Riverview Elementary*

Riverview kiddos will begin working on their Square 1 Art! This is a fundraiser that benefits our school as well as our kiddos families! This is how it works: Each kiddo receives a "special" piece of paper, draws a picture and colors it (picture subject and medium to be determined per grade). This image then gets sent back to the company, the image gets scanned and loaded onto their website for parents to view. The drawing that your kiddo has created can then be ordered on things such as mugs, bags, jewelry, cell phone cases, etc. These make for nice gifts/keepsakes! Parents will be notified when the images are ready and able to be accessed and ordered!! 

*Fishcreek Elementary*

My kiddos at Fishcreek will miss classes Monday, due to Labor Day, if they were scheduled to have Art Monday. However, we will begin our first art project in each class this week! Details and images to come :) 

ART SHIRTS!! 

As you all are aware, art mediums can be messy even when they are used correctly! Therefore, each kiddo (k-4) is required to wear a paint shirt when we use materials such as chalk, oil pastels, clay, paint or ink. If someone does not bring one or forgets it, I have a few extra at each building. Please be sure to send a paint shirt with your child!! Also, I try to explain that paint shirts are not magical! They prevent some mess, but materials can soak through! I encourage everyone to not wipe their hands or brushes on their shirts, but sometimes this doesn't sink in 0:)

Because I do not have any art images to share yet....

Last year I was out for a few months on maternity leave with my new little guy, Lane Owen Heverly. He is growing like a weed (19.4lbs & 27 1/2 inches long at 7 Months!) Lane is working on tooth #4, rolls around everywhere, is sitting on his own and he is in the process of learning to crawl. We had a blast this summer so I thought that I would share some photos :)

Finishing Up Our Clay in Time for the Holiday!

Just In Time For Winter Break!!

 

Kindergarten

Kindergarten Kiddos have been working with clay! Half-day Kindergarten made bugs and all-day Kindergarten made turtles out of pinch pots! Each student has painted their pinch pot creation, but the half-day students need to add eyes and legs to their bugs still! When we return from break we will be finishing up our clay and working on self-portraits!

First Grade 

First Grade students learned a coil technique while working with clay. Each student made a coil pot and painted it using watercolors. When we return from break we will be using colored construction paper and pipe cleaners to make flowers for our coil pots! 

Second Grade

In second grade, we expand on the pinch pot that students learned to create in kindergarten. Each kiddo made a pinch pot from clay and then had the option of creating a crab or a gnome house! Using watercolors, each second grader painted their clay object. When we return from break we will be working on finishing their guitars!

Third Grade

Third graders made clay pendant necklaces. Each student received a piece of clay that they rolled into a ball. Each student then stepped on their piece of clay leaving the pattern or imprint from their shoe.

Each student was given the option of coloring their clay with colored pencils or tempera paint! When we get back from break we will be adding string to our necklaces and creating display boards. After that students will begin weaving!!! :)
 

Fourth Grade

Students in fourth grade created clay mugs using a slab technique. Each student received a slab of clay for the walls of their mug, a small slab of clay for their handle and they created a base. Students were then allowed to carve into their mug. When we return from break, each student will glaze their mugs! These mugs will be dishwasher safe and they will be able to use the mugs to hold hot or cold liquids! :) When we return fourth grade students will finish painting their Magritte inspired self-portraits. 

4th Grade Sketchbooks

Sketchbooks & Sketchbook Discussions have been going very well!! These are the sketchbook assignments that we have completed so far:

****Important Update****

As some of you may know...I am pregnant and my little guy is due to arrive January 20th, 2014. If he decides to come early I will not be returning from break, but if he comes on time I am working until he decides to show up!! :) I have hand selected my substitute and she is going to begin coming into my classroom to meet the kiddos beginning Friday December 20, before break. Her name is Miss Schultz and she just graduated from The University of Akron in December! I am sure that she is full of new and fun ideas for art projects for the kiddos to create! I will be returning in April right before the Fine Arts Festivals/Art Shows. Fishcreek's Fine Arts Festival is April 15, 2014 and Riverview's Art Show is April 17, 2014. Everyone have a great Winter Break!!! :)

Imagine & Create!

The Creative Process Continues in Mrs. Heverly's Art Room!

Kindergarten

Kindergarten kiddos have been finishing up their owls! Kindergarteners tore pieces of brown paper and glued them onto a piece of black paper to resemble night. After all of the torn pieces of brown paper, or feathers were glued on, each student cut out and glued on eyes, a beak and feet! To complete the project, we used construction paper crayons to add a moon, stars and/or a tree branch! We are currently working on origami and clay will follow!

First Grade

First Grade students learned about warm and cool colors. At the beginning of each class we reviewed them before working on our projects and an image of warm and cool colors were displayed using the projector. Using what Mrs. Heverly calls "controlled scribbling," we colored patches of warm OR cool colors to fill our entire white piece of paper that would later become a background for our paintings. Students were to use as many warm OR cool colors as they could while utilizing crayons, markers and colored pencils. To complete this project, students learned about the famous artist Gustav Klimt and his Tree of Life painting. Using black tempera paint each kiddo painted their interpretation of Gustav's Tree of Life! We are currently working with clay!! :) 

 Second Grade 

In second grade, students have been working on mixed media self-portraits. After reviewing the parts of the fact, each student drew a self-portrait using a mirror and a pencil. When this step was completed, students then folded their paper creating four squares. In each square, a different medium was to be used. One square was colored using colored pencils, one with crayons, one with markers and the last one could be colored using pencil or one of the other mediums! We are currently working with clay!! :) 

Third Grade

Third grade students have been working on a mixture of projects! After finishing their Dia de los Muertos (Spanish Collaboration Project), students have been finishing up their Aboriginal Dot Art. After learning about Australia and their dot paintings, each student chose an animal to draw, paint and attach to piece of brightly colored paper. From there, we used neon colored tempera paint and pencil erasers to create patterns of dots around our animals. While finishing these up, students have been working with clay!! Next, third graders will be printmaking!  

 

Fourth Grade

Multicultural masks!! After exploring masks from different cultures, each student created their own. They were allowed to combine other masks or create their own original mask! Each student first drew their design on paper using pencil. From there, we transferred them onto a piece of aluminum tooling and colored them using colored sharpie markers. Next, we will be working with clay followed by self-portraits!  :)

*4th Grade SKETCHBOOKS!*
