The Creative Process Continues in Mrs. Heverly's Art Room!

Kindergarten

Kindergarten kiddos have been finishing up their owls! Kindergarteners tore pieces of brown paper and glued them onto a piece of black paper to resemble night. After all of the torn pieces of brown paper, or feathers were glued on, each student cut out and glued on eyes, a beak and feet! To complete the project, we used construction paper crayons to add a moon, stars and/or a tree branch! We are currently working on origami and clay will follow!

First Grade

First Grade students learned about warm and cool colors. At the beginning of each class we reviewed them before working on our projects and an image of warm and cool colors were displayed using the projector. Using what Mrs. Heverly calls "controlled scribbling," we colored patches of warm OR cool colors to fill our entire white piece of paper that would later become a background for our paintings. Students were to use as many warm OR cool colors as they could while utilizing crayons, markers and colored pencils. To complete this project, students learned about the famous artist Gustav Klimt and his Tree of Life painting. Using black tempera paint each kiddo painted their interpretation of Gustav's Tree of Life! We are currently working with clay!! :) 

 Second Grade 

In second grade, students have been working on mixed media self-portraits. After reviewing the parts of the fact, each student drew a self-portrait using a mirror and a pencil. When this step was completed, students then folded their paper creating four squares. In each square, a different medium was to be used. One square was colored using colored pencils, one with crayons, one with markers and the last one could be colored using pencil or one of the other mediums! We are currently working with clay!! :) 

Third Grade

Third grade students have been working on a mixture of projects! After finishing their Dia de los Muertos (Spanish Collaboration Project), students have been finishing up their Aboriginal Dot Art. After learning about Australia and their dot paintings, each student chose an animal to draw, paint and attach to piece of brightly colored paper. From there, we used neon colored tempera paint and pencil erasers to create patterns of dots around our animals. While finishing these up, students have been working with clay!! Next, third graders will be printmaking!  

 

Fourth Grade

Multicultural masks!! After exploring masks from different cultures, each student created their own. They were allowed to combine other masks or create their own original mask! Each student first drew their design on paper using pencil. From there, we transferred them onto a piece of aluminum tooling and colored them using colored sharpie markers. Next, we will be working with clay followed by self-portraits!  :)

*4th Grade SKETCHBOOKS!* 

Each fourth grade student received a sketchbook! Once a week I will assign a sketchbook assignment that will be discussed during the following art class. I believe that having an art critique about their sketchbooks will help them talk about their art once they are at Lakeview and Kimpton. Students who complete the assignment will be given bonus points! These sketchbooks are for the kiddos to keep and can be taken home! Also, they are allowed to draw in them in addition to their assignments, keeping the drawings school appropriate of course! These can also be decorated at home or I have supplies here at school! :)

Art is Happiness

Kindergarten

All of my kindergarten kiddos started the school year out learning about the artist Wayne Thiebaud. We looked at his artwork and focused on his cupcake art. Each student drew a cupcake with pencil, colored it using crayons, and painted the background with watercolors. We are currently working on town paper owls!

 First Grade 

To begin the year, we learned about Leonardo DaVinci's, Mona Lisa. Next, we discussed and drew a picture of where we would take Mona Lisa to make her smile :)
Our second project for the year were our self-portraits. We discussed the placement of things on our faces and looked at mirrors to draw our self-portraits. Students then used colored pencils to color their self-portraits. After learning about the different types of lines, we added them to our backgrounds using oil pastels. To complete the self-portraits students used watercolors! 

We are currently working with warm & cool colors. 

Second Grade

We started off the year with one of my favorite projects! To begin this project, we brainstormed underwater creatures, plants and other things that we might find underwater. Next, using pencil we drew our underwater pictures. After transferring them onto a piece of aluminum tooling, we completed them by coloring with colored sharpie markers. 

We are currently working on mixed media self-portraits! 

Third Grade

Third graders are in the process of working on 3 projects!! We began the year by discussing Aboriginal Art and Australia. Next students chose and drew an Australian animal and painted it. Next, they will be cutting them out, gluing them onto a piece of colored paper, and adding the paint dots. 

We also began drawing our self-portraits with pencil and transferring them onto a piece of foam. We will be using these for printmaking onto a piece of paper that each student colored using a variety of colored crayons. 

To collaborate with Spanish, I introduced Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), a Mexican holiday that is celebrated on October 31st through November 2nd. We first discussed the focus of the holiday and then we viewed a variety of bright and colorful Day of the Dead masks. Using a black piece of paper and oil pastels, each student dew a skull and then added bright colorful decorations! 

 We are currently working on all three of these :) 

Fourth Grade 

At the beginning of the year, fourth grade students learned about a famous artwork titled American Gothic, by Grant Wood. We then discussed the term parody and looked at examples of parodies of American Gothic. Next, using pencil, each student created their own parody of the work and completed the work of art using their choice of colored pencils, markers, crayons or oil pastels. 

We are currently working on multicultural masks.

Once Again...

The Creativity Begins Once Again!!

Kindergarten Kiddos Made Frogs!  

 We discussed where frogs live, what they eat, what they look like and what they do! Then each kiddo drew and colored their own! 

 

First Graders Created Underwater Pictures! 

 After discussing creatures, plants and other things that are found underwater, we created our own. Each kiddo was given a fish to color and glue on as well. 

Second Graders Drew Turtles! 

 Each kiddo drew at least one turtle after we discussed their shell patterns, types and shapes. We also talked about the perspective of the turtles that each kiddo drew. 

 Third Graders Created Animals & Habitats

 In their classrooms, third graders were learning about animals and their habitats. To collaborate with 3rd grade classroom common core standards, each student drew and animal along with their animals habitat.  

Fourth Grade Drew Animals & Borders! 

 Each fourth grader chose an animal that they wanted to draw. Next we discussed borders and what they were. Each student was required to add a border to their drawing that could relate to their chosen animal or it could simply be a design.
